Staying focused all night long, Talk ‘N Text was too hot to handle for Rain or Shine.

Refusing to do anything extra curricular on the court, the Tropang Texters on Friday night manhandled the Elasto Painters in the final three quarters on the way to a 103-94 Game 5 victory for a 3-2 lead in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup title series at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ivan Johnson and Ranidel de Ocampo fired 27 points each and Jason Castro scored all of his 15 points in the last three quarters while issuing nine assists and having three steals as the Texters won for the second straight night.

The victory meant that the Texters have two chances of wrapping this series up, with the first to come Sunday afternoon also at the fabled Big Dome floor at 5 p.m.

“It’s not over yet,” Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico said. “It’s good that we won, but we need four games. We know that Rain or Shine is always ready to play and in our minds, we shouldn’t think that they (Elasto Painters) will give this (series) away.”

Talk ‘N Text trailed by as big as 10 points in the first period, was still down by two entering the second, before zooming away with a methodical offense and unforgiving defense going into the halftime break.

Johnson scored eight and Castro seven and the Talk ‘N Text defense held the Painters to a paltry 13 points in the second frame to take a 56-42 lead into the second half.

It was all Talk ‘N Text from there as the Texters even took a 67-47 lead with over seven minutes left in the third period after a Larry Fonacier free throw off a technical foul slapped on Beau Belga for trash talking Johnson.

Talk ‘N Text played with a lot of intensity but refused to be baited into a rough game by the Painters, who could come no closer than five points the rest of the way, 94-99, going into the final 1:07.

Fonacier was the fourth man in twin digits for Uichico with 12.

Wayne Chism scored 25 points and had 17 rebounds for Rain or Shine, which drew 19 markers from Paul Lee and 10 from Ryan Arana but clearly showed the need for Jeff Chan, the Painters’ main outside shooter.

Chan sat it out for the second straight night and is likely to be out for the rest of the series because of plantar fasciitis. The Painters lost back-to-back games for the first time in the conference and would need to win two straight against the formidable Texters to win the franchise’s second title and the first since the 2012 Governors’ Cup with Jamelle Cornley.

Action on the floor was relatively all basketball compared to the first four games of the best-of-seven series, what happened off of it way after the game was where the color of the night happened.

Wives of players from both teams got into a loud shouting match in the hallway, with Mrs. Harvey Carey and Mrs. Jireh Ibanes cursing each other that required players from both camps to intervene.

This is the first time that an incident involving players’ wives happened, and it took place in full view of fans who were waiting for the players to come out.
