COLUMBUS, Ohio: Heavy rain for the third day in a row flooded sections of Muirfield Village to halt play Saturday at the Presidents Cup with the United States leading the Internationals 6 1/2-5 1/2.

The Americans led in three four-ball matches while the Internationals were ahead in one and another was all square when players were called off the soggy course.

Rivers of rain were flowing down some fairways and several greens were plagued by puddles, finally forcing both teams to the clubhouse after they played through two prior heavy downpours using lift, clean and place rules.

“It’s testing everyone’s patience,” Internationals captain Nick Price said of the latest stoppage. “As soon as we dry out, the next squall comes through. I just hope we can finish so we can get a result.”

The delay likely means that five alternate-shot foursomes matches scheduled for later in the afternoon will not be finished by darkness.

Severe thunderstorms and up to three inches of rain are predicted for Sunday, when 12 concluding singles matches are scheduled.

“I feel bad for both teams,” US captain Fred Couples said. “The players are getting poured on. The golf is incredible. Hopefully we’ll get this done sooner rather than later.”

The Internationals and Americans split four alternate-shot matches that had to be completed Saturday morning because of a Friday storm delay of two hours and 36 minutes.

Reigning Masters champion Adam Scott of Australia and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama led world No. 1 Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar 1-up after 11 holes in a showdown of unbeaten duos.

Matsuyama opened with a birdie and added another from 15 feet at the third hole for a 2-up lead. Woods answered with a four-foot birdie at the par-3 fourth and his third birdie in a row won the sixth to square the match.

But Matsuyama sank a five-foot par putt to win the 10th hole and a 10-footer to halve the par-5 11th.

Woods, a 14-time major champion and PGA Player of the Year after five wins this season, has won a record 22 Presidents Cup matches.

Kuchar, this year’s WGC Match Play winner, is defending champion at the Memorial, the US PGA event played at Muirfield Village. He is the 19th career Presidents and Ryder Cup partner for Woods, a five-time Memorial winner.

Reigning British Open champion Phil Mickelson, a five-time major winner, and Keegan Bradley were 2-up after 14 holes over South African Ernie Els and Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge.

Steve Stricker and Jordan Spieth were even with Aussie Jason Day and Canada’s Graham DeLaet after 14 holes.

Bill Haas and Webb Simpson were 4-up on Argentina’s Angel Cabrera and South African Branden Grace after 13 holes while Hunter Mahan and Brandt Snedeker led South African major winners Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen 2-up after 12 holes.

The Internationals earned a 3-3 foursomes split early, the first session in the format since 2005 they had not lost, when Scott and Maruyama beat major winners Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner 2 and 1.

Woods and Kuchar beat Schwartzel and Oosthuizen 4 and 2 earlier. Stricker and Spieth beat South Africans Grace and Richard Sterne 2 and 1. Cabrera and Aussie Marc Leishman beat Simpson and Snedeker 2 and 1.
