Mets edge Giants to go top of NL East

NEW YORK: The New York Mets returned to the top of the National League East standings with a 5-4 win against San Francisco on Thursday, secured when Michael Cuddyer singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Mets moved above Washington, which gave up a four-run lead and lost at Milwaukee.
Elsewhere, Albert Pujols moved to 16th place on the all-time list with a his 537th home run as the Los Angeles Angels won at Tampa Bay, while San Diego won in 11 innings against Atlanta in a match that included a benches-clearing showdown.
San Francisco pitcher Sergio Romo (0-3) hit Curtis Granderson in the back on a 0-2 pitch with one out in the ninth. Granderson advanced to third on a passed ball then a groundout.
After an intentional walk, Cuddyer stroked a single into center field to bring home Granderson and end the game.
Granderson scored twice and also drove in a run while Cuddyer hit the go-ahead double in the fifth inning.
Los Angeles' Albert Pujols hit his landmark homer to pass former New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle on the career list, and help the Angels beat Tampa Bay 6-2.
Pujols' 17th home run of the season, which came in the ninth inning, was his 1,122nd extra-base hit, tying Manny Ramirez for 14th place in that category. The 35-year-old has 1,685 RBIs, one short of Ernie Banks who is 29th on the all-time list.
Mike Trout drove in two runs with his 17th home run and a double. Trout, who had three straight hits, hit his sixth homer in 11 games for the Angels' first run. Trout's two-out double drove in another run in the seventh after rookie Kyle Kubitza's single had given Los Angeles its first lead of the game, 3-2.
San Diego's Yangervis Solarte hit a two-run single in the 11th inning to give the Padres a 6-4 win against Atlanta.
In the first inning, players left the dugouts preparing for a confrontation after Braves pitcher Julio Teheran hit Matt Kemp with a fastball. No punches were thrown and no one was ejected.
Padres manager Bud Black was ejected in the seventh for arguing with umpires.
Chicago's Miguel Montero and Dexter Fowler each homered to lead the Cubs to a 6-3 win against Cincinnati.
Montero's three-run homer in the first off Michael Lorenzen (1-2) gave Chicago an early lead, and Fowler's third-inning drive put the Cubs in front 4-2.
