GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany: Tina Maze of Slovenia became the first skier to break the 2,000-point mark in a season with her victory in Saturday’s World Cup downhill.
Maze secured the overall World Cup title one week ago and with 100 points for her ninth win of the season she now has 2,024 points. Austrian great Hermann Maier held the previous record of 2,000 points.
With 20 podium finishes this season, Maze is second on the all-time list with Phil Mahre of the United States, who did it in 1981-82. Maier holds the record with 22 podium finishes in the 1999-2000 season.
Maze became only the third woman to win all five disciplines in a single season.
Laurenne Ross of the United States was second and Maria-Hoefl Riesch of Germany took third.
