Unfortunate death

Unfortunately, prayers of millions of Indians around the world went unheard. All Indians around the world were shattered by the unfortunate death of a 23-year-old young paramedical student, who put up a brave battle for life after she was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a moving bus in Delhi on Dec. 16. We must not think it is a Delhi girl who lost her life it is one of our sister, daughter, an Indian and a human being who lost her life.

No words are sufficient to describe this sad end. Such incidents should not be brushed aside. If we don’t act now, we will continue to see such uncivilized behavior in our society. Gender based crimes are one of the most rampant malpractices in the Indian society. The society does not realize that they are committing the worst crime possible against humanity. It is high time that the government of India acted fast, amended the laws to ensure severe punishments are given to culprits to avoid such cases to happen in the future. It must serve as a lesson to everyone who intends to do this brutal act.

As a parent my heart goes out to girl’s parents and the family. May God give them strength to cope with such a tremendous loss. “The day when a woman can walk in the midnight without any fear is the day when India is really free,” said Gandhiji. The need of the hour is to realize our responsibilities and put an end to these evil crimes. — Mir Gazanfar Ali Zaki, Jeddah
