It has become a regular feature to write adverse comments against India especially about how Muslims are treated in the country. Recently, in an unsolicited advice, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rahman Malik called on India to provide security to Shahrukh Khan. Such statements reveal the
negative mindset of some Pakistanis. I would like to submit that India has the second largest Muslim population in the world. Muslim population in India which was around 12 percent at the time of partition has more than kept pace with Hindus in terms of birth rate and today Muslims constitute 20 percent of India’s total population. On the other hand, if we look at Pakistan we find a continuing decline in Hindu population. Prior to the partition, Hindus constituted a substantial 26 percent of the total population in the country which dipped to 15 percent after the bloody events of 1947. And presently Hindus are barely a minuscule two percent. Should we be given advice on how to treat our minorities? Also, Muslims are found in almost all walks of life apart from the top security apparatus and have won distinguished cultural awards as writers, artists, film directors and musicians.
Yes, we do have problems just like any other country but it is definitely nothing compared to what is happening in India’s neighborhood.
