Protests across US over Gray’s death

BALTIMORE, Maryland: Protests over the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray spread across the US overnight as troops helped maintain a curfew and authorities were forced into an apparent backdown after holding suspected rioters for days without charge.
Officials are trying to manage growing expectations they’ll immediately decide whether to prosecute six police officers involved in the arrest of the black man who died of mysterious spinal injuries apparently received while in custody.
In an effort to be transparent, authorities have told the community they plan to turn over the findings of a police investigation into Gray’s death to a state’s attorney by Friday. Prosecutors will review the information and eventually decide how to move forward. After meeting with high school students, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake cited rumors that some kind of “verdict” would be rendered soon.
Rawlings-Blake said “it became very clear ... that people misunderstood.”
Looting, arson and street clashes with police roiled the city on Monday after Gray’s funeral.
