KARACHI: Pakistani stocks ended higher on Thursday, echoing global market sentiment and buoyed by lower-than-expected inflation figures for September.
The benchmark 100-share index of the Karachi Stock Exchange closed up 1.43 percent at 32,750.31.
“Bullish momentum in the international market boosted local investors’ confidence as they took fresh positions,” said Mohammad Rizwan, vice president at Topline Securities (Pvt) Ltd.
Pakistan’s annual consumer inflation rate fell to 1.32 percent in September, from 1.72 percent in August, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics announced earlier in the day.
This is the lowest year-on-year inflation in more than 12 years. Prices dropped 0.10 percent in September, as compared to August. Average annual inflation for July-September 2015-16 over July-September 2014-15 was 1.66 percent.
Among the big gainers were Pak Electron Ltd. and Maple Leaf Cement Factory Ltd.
“Stability in international oil prices also led investors to take interest in oil stocks,” said Rizwan.
Attock Petroleum Ltd, Pakistan Petroleum Ltdand Oil and Gas Development Co. Ltd. saw sharp gains.
The rupee was unchanged at 104.45/104.50 against the dollar.
Overnight rates in the money market fell to 6.00 percent from Wednesday’s close of 6.50 percent.
