NEW YORK: US stock markets rang out 2013's final session Tuesday with new record closes for both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500.

Solid gains for the day capped a year which saw the Dow add more than 28 percent and the S&P nearly 32 percent.

Gains came across the board: for the day, the Dow added 72.37 points (0.44 percent) at 16,576.66.

The S&P 500 gained 7.29 (0.40 percent) at 1,848.36, while the Nasdaq Composite hit its own high for the year, rising 22.39 (0.54 percent) to 4,176.59.

Facebook (+1.8 percent) and Amazon (+1.4 percent) led major S&P shares, while American Express (+1.3 percent) topped the Dow.
