Samsung Engineering’s CSR program eco-generation and the Royal Commission in Jubail (RC) hosted the awarding ceremony of the 2014 Eco-Generation Environmental Essay Competition at Samsung Naffora Techno Valley (SNTV), Samsung Engineering’s engineering complex in the Kingdom, on Jan. 27.

Two winners and nine honorable mentions were announced. The winners of this year are Abdulrahman Al-Buanain from Al-Khaleej International School and Khalid Al-Shehri from Al-Farouk Intermediate School.

In November, Saudi students of grades seven through eleven attending the RC schools submitted their essays on "Climate change and sustainable city — Our efforts through eco-generation website" and 11 finalists were selected for the final English speaking interview.

The event started off with a welcome speech by CSR Manager Jaffar H. Al-Ghawi of Samsung Engineering Saudi Arabia followed by a speech of Hadi Ali Al-Rashidi from the RC-Jubail.

Al-Ghawi said: “With more than 400 students in Korea, the 2014 Global Youth for the Environment Forum will provide an unforgettable environmental education opportunity for the winners."

He said, "We at Samsung Engineering are very glad to host this environmental contest for the second year with the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu.”

Al-Ghawi added: "Eco-generation will continue to be one of the company’s core initiatives to support and contribute to the local community and new generation worldwide with comprehensive environmental education."

At the award ceremony, all the participants were given an eco-generation certificate and souvenir and the top two speakers were invited to an all expense paid trip to South Korea for a cultural and environmental education program.

"2014 Global Youth Eco-Leadership Summit” will be held in Seoul in February.

Abdulrahman Al-Buanain, one of the winners, said: “I will try to introduce our efforts of youths in Jubail to make our city sustainable to the global friends from all around the world,” he added.
