Venue host Dunes and Shemesy scored rousing opening day wins in the Siglakas International Riyadh South District Unity Cup Basketball Tournament 2012 at the Dunes Compound Filipino Community basketball court in Olaya Thalateen area here.
The 15 participating teams and muses paraded in their colorful uniforms and along with the guests and venue sponsor were welcomed by league commissioner Henry Dumalaon during the opening program hosted by Joan Malayo, Aiza Guerrero, Hazel Redolme and Sarah Jane Suguitan. Siglakas Adviser Felix A. Flor, Jr., Siglakas President Ed Sarmiento, Siglakas Chairman Willy Espiritu and Dunes Compound representative Rex Badida delivered their speeches.
Shemesy and its muse Djoann Lly Datu Chua emerged Best Team in Uniform and Best Muse winners. Ricky Vargas, last season’s MVP, led the oath of sportsmanship after which Dumalaon declared the tournament open. Felix A. Flor Jr. made the ceremonial toss of the ball.
Dunes coach James Bugawisan banked on the trio of Best Player Michael Gatchalian, Edmund Icban and Rex Badida to close the initial period ahead at 17-14.
The second quarter scenario saw coach Ric Buban’s Industrial suqad anchored by Jayson Canares, Manuel Fronda, Rogelio Galit, Constantino Dagle and Paul Jeremy Sedeno try in vain to dominate the board to get closer in the period which ended with Dunes sitting on a 35-26 lead.
Both teams were keen to get their first win but Dunes, in collaboration with Bernardo Alonso, Mark Pelagio, Clemente Orca, Leo Alvaran, Nilo Bragado and Bryan Querubin proved the better team to win by 69-59.
Coach Cris Aborde’s Shemesy had the tandem of veteran Chris Mangibin and novice Crisvin Aborde along with Rusty Rabe, Reneil Ebora and Jonarie Lat blending well in an 84-71 win over Yamama team of coach Freddie Gilos.
Yamama starring Ronnie Maninang, Ricky Vargas, Dennis Enriquez, Rolly Paul Magdato and Rolly Talaban took the first two quarters at 25-21 and 43-39. Coach Aborde effectively made adjustments in his team’s to wrap up the third canto at 60-58 on the way to their 13-point march to victory.

Flor, Jr. and chairpersons Willy Espiritu, Ed Resurreccion, Ricardo Manlutac, Ed Sarmiento, Oscar Rico, Rene Layug, Joe Amoncio, Salvador Vargas, Albert Datijan, Paul Alcantara and Ricky Guerrero. Dunes Compound Filipino Community through Rex Badida and Ben Samson Duhaylungsod also support the tournament.
Helping Dumalaon run the tournament are the 3-Kapisanan working committee Cris Cabigting, Romeo Manahan, Leo Zamora, Joan Malayo, Aiza Guerrero, Hazel Redolme and Sarah Jane Suguitan. The Siglakas Referees Group led by Artemio Turla handles the tournament officiating.
