EL-ARISH, Egypt: Egyptian intelligence officials say Bedouin smugglers have shot and wounded a border guard near the country’s porous border with Israel.
The officials said Saturday the smugglers were driving two vehicles transporting African migrants who were trying to cross into Israel illegally. The Bedouin opened fire in an attempt to distract the border guards.
Officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, say the smugglers and migrants fled the scene after Friday’s shooting and did not enter Israel.
The Egyptian border guard has been transferred to a hospital with a bullet wound to his neck.
Israel is building a border fence along Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula to keep migrants out. About 60,000 Africans have entered Israel in recent years, some seeking asylum and others looking for work.
