LAUSANNE, Switzerland: The European Athletics federation has named Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis as its female athlete of the year.
The British athlete finished above high jump gold medalist Anna Chicherova of Russia and javelin champion Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic in a poll of European national federations, fans, media and an expert panel.
Ennis achieved personal bests in three of her seven disciplines at the London Games to score a British record of 6,955 points.
It was the home team’s first track and field goal medal on what became known as “Super Saturday” in the Olympic Stadium on Aug. 4.
European Athletics says it will name its male athlete of the year on Friday.
The awards are presented Oct. 13 in Malta.
