The first phase of the project to expand mataf in the Grand Mosque in Makkah is scheduled to end before Ramadan.
Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques, yesterday inspected progress of work on the project, which is expected to increase mataf’s capacity to 150,000 per hour. “Fifteen weeks have passed since the project was started,” said Al-Sudais.
Sheikh Sudais said the mosque’s old pillars and engravings would be kept safe and showcased at an exhibition for people.
Concrete work on the northern side of the mataf is in progress. “We have removed two minarets near Bab Al-Fatah without causing any inconvenience to pilgrims and worshippers,” he added.
“The project will not only increase the mataf’s capacity but also help the faithful perform the circumambulation ritual in a better manner,” he said.
