I read with interest the article “From a feverish Karachi” (June 29) by Muhammad Waqas. It is not only this writer but most Pakistanis are appalled at the irresponsible behavior of their politicians. They think that by issuing such silly statements they could alter the course of the debate that is raging in the country i.e. our so-called leaders are incompetent and they just want to pass the buck to “other forces” to prove their innocence. We completely understand that the harsh weather condition in Pakistan particularly in its Sindh province is a natural phenomenon. Nobody could be blamed for that. It is the response to this crisis that is questionable. Now one of the ministers from the ruling party has forwarded a novel theory about the worsening climatic conditions i.e. directly or indirectly India is behind the current crisis. These people need to grow up. The writer has aptly pointed out that it was only when this minister issued this statement exposing his ignorance about such matters, he also made people aware of the existence of his ministry. Such an irresponsible statement coming from a person supposedly heading the ministry of climate change clearly indicates that he is not qualified for the job.
I admit the fact that I find it difficult to understand the terminologies used by the meteorological experts but issuing such silly comments are beyond comprehension. Around two months or so ago, I remember reading reports perhaps issued by some prestigious organization responsible for monitoring weather patterns and climatic changes. The report had warned of an unprecedentedly harsh summer in parts of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Instead of taking measures to address the situation, our politicians tend to politicize every issue for their own gains or to hide their incompetence. The manner in which the situation is being dealt with at the government level is far from satisfactory. The good-for-nothing chief minister of the province appears to be living in a fool’s paradise. He is not even bothered about the increasing death toll. These politicians should realize that their foolish statements only rub salt into our wounds. — Tariq Jadoon, Jeddah
