This refers to the report “47 dead in Mumbai building collapse” (April 6). The illegal structure, which was under construction, collapsed in Shil Phata area. Shil Phata is located between Mumbra and Dombivli in Thane district. It is very sad to write that most of the residents in Mumbra-Kausa town are Muslims.
Builders in this are of the city do not care about legal permission or quality of materials being used in construction. The callous attitude of these builders is mainly responsible for poor quality construction of the new buildings that are coming up in the area.
People living in this locality are poor and this is why they prefer to purchase low-cost flats, ignoring safety and legal concerns.
Also, the building that caved in had the foundation for four stories only, but greedy builders went on to erect 7 stories. I think corrupt government officers along with the builders must be brought to justice for allowing illegal construction. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
