Qurtaba is the old name of Cordoba, a city in Spain where Muslims ruled for almost 800 years. Traces of a Muslim heritage can still be found in many cities in the south of Spain, such as Cordoba and Granada.
The Arab House, an institution that is part of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the cooperation of Spanish Embassy and Arabian Wings, an organization that supports the development of the fine arts sector in the Kingdom in partnership with Abdul Latif Jameel, organized a photo exhibition in Jeddah depicting the Madinat Al-Zahra archaeological site in Cordoba, Spain. The photos bear witness to the outstanding Arab architecture that is excavated here.
“The exhibition aims to promote cultural, political and artistic connections between the Arab world and Spain. These connections are particularly easy because in Spain there are many traces of Islamic history,” said Spanish Ambassador Jaquin Perez Villanueva at its inauguration.
He further said the exhibition is a result of a competition between Spanish photographers. The 50 best pictures are displayed.
“They reflect a very special part of Islamic common history in Cordoba. Madinat Al-Zahra was at the top in historical, cultural, arts and scientific fields in the 11th century. We are bringing that glory back by reconstructing it, so the exhibition is a reflection of that history inside Cordoba,” explained Perez Villanueva.
He said the message is to show the respect the Spanish population could get for restoring the past. The traveling exhibition was previously in Riyadh. After the exhibition ends in Jeddah on June 26, it will go to Madinah.
Mohammed Bharawi, founder of Arabian Wings said “From Qurtuba to Cordoba” was an excellent exhibition that gave a lot of information about the excavations in Cordoba.
“Its remind us the glory of Islam and Arab, and Spain is promoting it through the Spanish photographers,” he added.
The pictures represented the splendor of buildings, architecture and the heritage of Islam and Muslims.
