The Jeddah Traffic Department has issued a stern warning to all that it would not tolerate behavior that will cause congestion on National Day and has cautioned citizens that it would impose a SR500 fine against perpetrators.
Second-time offenders will have their vehicles impounded and their driving licenses revoked.
Saudi National Day celebrations have been marred in previous years by various traffic violations and offensive public behavior.
Teenagers have regularly been witnessed blocking streets with their cars and dancing and singing on the streets, while others paint their cars in the national flag color and post pictures on their vehicles' windows.
Brig. Gen. Wasl Allah Al-Harbi, acting chief of Jeddah traffic police, told Arab News that his department has taken precautions ahead of the celebrations. “Around 200 officers, 1,900 policemen and 170 traffic patrols will be dispatched across the city to ensure traffic flow remains smooth and no violations are committed,” he said.
“Traffic police have also cautioned accessory shops against embellishing cars with designs and paint that obstruct driver's vision and warned that it would impose a hefty fine of SR5,000 against violators who engage in such practices. Shopsowners who repeat the violation for a second time will face closure,” Al-Harbi added.
