There has been an enthusiastic public response to the sea safety and environment campaign launched by the Saudi Coast Guard.
Col. Naji Al-Juhani, a member of the coast guard and the campaign committee chairman, said on Monday that the number of visitors has exceeded expectations.
The various activities at the Red Sea Mall include a quiz show with prizes for children on safety measures they should follow on Saudi beaches. There are also safety tips for picnickers, fishermen, sportspeople and swimmers.
Several government agencies have pavilions at the event demonstrating various safety measures.
The activities began in Makkah region on Friday evening. Maj. Gen. Badr Jabri, chief of the Border Guard in Makkah region, opened the event in the presence of several senior officials from his organization and the coast guard.
The event is sanctioned by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, and follows resolutions of the GCC interior ministers to create a culture of safety on the Gulf coastlines.
One of the main aims of the campaign is to raise awareness of the dedicated “994” maritime emergency number that people should dial in emergencies.
Al-Jabri told Arab News it “is essential that all sea-goers take the necessary precautions, including owning and wearing a life jacket. It is also important that swimmers, fishermen and water sportsmen know how to get themselves out of a tight spot at sea.” Al-Juhani said the event would raise awareness among citizens and residents on standards of maritime safety and security, and the integrity of the environment.
He underscored the importance of interaction and communication with the public.
