We all have those little time wasters in our lives. Maybe you spend 10 extra minutes in your car to listen to the radio when you should be in your office, or maybe you start your day with emails when diving into a project would be better. You can identify and then eliminate those time-sucks simply by keeping better track of them.
There are apps that can help you keep your productivity online in check such as Rescuetime. It is great at showing you how you spend your time on your computer but can’t help you with tracking your activity off your computer.
You can write down your list of things you’ve done (including things you shouldn’t have done!) or better yet, use an app like iDoneThis. Done lists are a great way to keep track of your accomplishments during a day, but adding the things you wasted time on can be valuable, too. Seeing them stacked up there with your accomplishments gives you an idea of how you truly spend (or waste) your time and ultimately can give you extra motivation for eliminating them.
iDoneThis is a free service that motivates you by keeping a calendar of the tasks you actually accomplish.
How to use it? Every evening, the app will send you a notification to ask you what you did today. You reply by listing all the tasks you've accomplished, and it will put them on a simple calendar. Not only does this help you keep yourself accountable to actually get things done, but scanning through what you got done over the last week or month is great for a little motivation boost.
