RIYADH: The Pakistani side lifted the Diplomat’s Cup cricket trophy after the final against India at the Nasiriya sports complex on Saturday, thanks to the outstanding bowling of Farman Ullah who took six wickets and conceded just 15 runs.
Salman Qureshi at the British Council and Aamir Shahzad at the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs organized the inaugural tournament under the banner of the British Council and education trainer Knowledge Core.
Qureshi liaised with diplomatic officials to secure teams from the embassies of the US, the UK, Canada, Pakistan and India. All participants were officials from these missions, from deputy heads to attaches and officers.
At the start of the final, the Indian Embassy won the toss and put the Pakistani side on the field but the first inning ended with India not completing the 20-overs quota: They were bowled-out for 121 runs.
Pakistan Embassy opener Mohammed Idrees was the highest scorer, not-out at 56 and taking the green shirts to victory.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Qureshi, the founder of the Diplomats’ Cup, said, “I am very confident more will come,” amid a roar of applause from the large audience.
Prince Abdul Aziz bin Matab bin Mohamed Al-Saud presented trophies to the victors and distributed medals among the players.
