  • Delta variant could spread faster during holidays as people travel from cities like Karachi and Islamabad to hometowns

ISLAMABAD: Zaeem Zia, the district health officer of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, on Wednesday warned people against gathering together over the Eid Al-Adha holiday as the positivity rate in the city climbed up to 8.9 percent.
Earlier this week, the provincial government in the southern Sindh province had said the spread of the coronavirus Delta variant was reaching alarming levels in Karachi, the country’s largest city and financial hub, and warned people that ignoring precautionary measures during the holiday could make matters worse.
The Delta variant could spread during the holiday as people travel from cities like Karachi and Islamabad to their hometowns.
Last week, Pakistan’s planning minister, Asad Umar, said hospitals were seeing a rapid build-up in the influx of COVID patients. He had earlier warned of a fourth wave if precautionary measures were not followed.
“Today we have 186 positive cases of COVID19 diagnosed against 2,077 tests in the federal capital. Positivity is 8.9 percent,” Zia said on Twitter. “Celebrate your eid and share happiness over phone calls try not to visit your relatives as it may fuel the spread of the virus. Remember, it’s DELTA variant!”
The district health office in Islamabad said on Tuesday cases of the Delta variant were “spreading fast” in Islamabad, urging people to wear masks and follow health guidelines over Eid.
“And pray a lot in these blessed days, so that this epidemic can be cured forever,” the DHO said.
