  • Government has administered 10 million vaccine doses in past nine days, planning minister says
  • Over 40 million doses administered since February when vaccine drive was launched

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday recorded 102 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, the first time there have been more than 100 COVID-19 fatalities since May, government data showed.
Pakistan reported 4,934 new infections on Thursday, with a national positivity ratio of 8.3 percent, the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC), which oversees Pakistan’s national pandemic response, said.

Pakistan is currently going through a fourth wave of the coronavirus, and is struggling to pick up the pace of its vaccine campaign.
Planning minister and NCOC head Asad Umar said on Thursday the government had administered 10 million vaccine doses in the past nine days. Over 40 million doses have been administered since February when the vaccine drive was launched.

Referring to recent legislative assembly elections held in Pakistan’s semi-autonomous Azad Kashmir region last year, Umar said he had recommended postponing the elections for a few months and holding a “special vaccination campaign” before opening the polls.
“It was not agreed. Since the elections the positivity of AJK is running between 25 and 30 percent,” the minister said. “Elections have acted as a super spreader event.”
