LONDON: Major General Al-Nour Ahmed Adam, known as “Al-Qubba,” has defected from the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and joined the Sudanese army in a significant development in the country’s ongoing conflict, Doha-based Al Jazeera News Network reported
Qubba’s defection follows a pattern of high-profile departures, including that of Abu Aqla Kikel in 2024, pointing to growing instability within the paramilitary group.
Kikel, who was head of the Sudan Shield forces, defected to the army while leading RSF operations in Al-Jazirah State, later playing a key role in its recapture.
Field sources told Al Jazeera that Qubba’s decision was driven by escalating disputes with RSF leadership, including disagreements over command appointments after the battle for Al-Fashir, as well as tribal tensions, personal grievances, and increasing pressure on him from within the group.
Sudan has been gripped by conflict since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The war, which began in the capital Khartoum, has since spread across large parts of the country, including the western region of Darfur, triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Tens of thousands have been killed, millions displaced, and repeated ceasefire efforts have failed, as both sides continue to battle for control and influence.
