SRINAGAR, 24 November 2005 — Five persons — two militants and three paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel — were killed and three others injured in clashes at a CRPF company headquarters in Hawal area of Srinagar yesterday. Two militants were killed elsewhere.

The militants first hurled grenades at the entrance of the company headquarters and also opened fire. One of the intruders was killed at the entrance while the other managed to enter the main building, Ranjit Sinha, inspector general of CRPF told Arab News.

Federal police spokesman R.K. Singh said: “We neutralized both before they could inflict heavy losses on us.” He said one policeman was wounded in the initial attack. The gunshots and grenade explosions caused panic among civilians in the Hawal locality of downtown Srinagar.

The Indian Army meanwhile killed two more militants during a gunbattle in the southern district of Anantnag early yesterday, police said. The fresh violence came as the region’s main rebel alliance yesterday rejected India’s offer of assistance to militants who give up violence.
