RIYADH, 11 February 2007 — Polish twins Daria and Olga, who were surgically separated two years ago at the King Abdul Aziz Medical City, have been admitted to the hospital for a colostomy.
“The twins who were separated in January 2005, have been brought here for a routine check-up and to carry out preliminary tests for their anticipated colostomy,” Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, head of the multi-disciplinary medical team, told Arab News.
Though a colostomy was part of the original surgical plan for the twins, the tests are being carried out to ascertain whether there is still a need for such an operation.
A colostomy is a surgical procedure in which the colon is shortened to remove a damaged part and the cut end is diverted to an opening in the abdominal wall.
Daria and Olga are accompanied by their mother, Wieslawa Dabrowska, and a Polish pediatrician, Dr. Jolanta Jezewska. The twins were born on Oct. 8, 2003, in Lodz, Poland, to a 38-year-old seamstress.
The twins have come to Riyadh as part of the rehabilitation program undertaken during the post-surgical period, Polish Ambassador Adam Kulach explained.
