The organization, called “The Friends of Potholes,” has mostly engineers, doctors and businessmen as its members.
Supervisor of the society Nasser Al-Khanji said he applied for a license for the organization to operate, Al-Madinah daily reported.
There are no precise statistics about the number of potholes in Jeddah. However, a municipal official who did not want his name published, said his office received 74,000 complaints about potholes and cracks on the roads, particularly since two devastating floods in 2009 and earlier this year. The society has been filling some of the potholes itself and in some cases posting warning signals to drivers. About four years ago, a motorist was reportedly killed after his car hit a pothole in Obhur.
Al-Khanji questioned why the municipality was taking a long time repairing cracks and potholes especially as the city was celebrating its longest summer festival.
