The South African Rugby Union says Mostert will join the squad in Sydney on Sunday, replacing Johann Muller who leaves the tour of Australia and New Zealand after failing to recover from a hamstring strain.
SARU said another second-rower, Flip van der Merwe, was struggling with a rib problem sustained in Saturday’s one-sided 39-20 defeat by Australia in the Tri-Nations opener.
South Africa was already without 21 injured players for its away matches in the southern hemisphere championship, including frontline locks Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Andries Bekker.
Bekker will miss the entire Tri-Nations and the World Cup with a ruptured ankle tendon.
