JEDDAH: The Special Criminal Court in Riyadh issued a preliminary verdict of six years in prison for an Egyptian resident accused of spying for Iran.
The man was convicted of sending secret documents and of having established contact with the Iranian Embassy in Beirut for the purpose of spying against the Kingdom and its armed forces.
He sent a secret document on the Saudi Army to the Iranian Embassy in Beirut, which asked him to get more information on a number of matters regarding the Kingdom.
The court handed him six years in prison, starting with the date of his arrest, a fine of SR5,000 and deportation from the Kingdom after he serves out his prison term.
He can challenge the verdict in the Court of Appeals within 30 days from the pronouncement of the judgment, the judge ruled.
This is not the first espionage case the Special Criminal Court in Riyadh has dealt with. On Feb. 21, 2016, the court started the trial of a spy ring that included 30 Saudis, an Afghan and an Iranian who had direct links with Iranian intelligence officers and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Members of the spy ring were arrested in March 2013 in four different regions: Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh and the Eastern Province.
