This is with reference to the report “Reading between the lines” (June 6) by Osman Mirghani. The shift in the US Middle East policies should be seen as a blessing in disguise.

Of course, the initial uneasiness of the Arab world is justified but now is the time to start taking steps to become self-reliant. We should not feel dejected by the US policies. It has all the right to work for its global and regional interests. The Arab world is in a position to pursue its interests without thinking about its impact on its ties with the US.

The Saudi Arabia-led military operation in Yemen is a strong message to the world that the Gulf Arab countries are fully capable of defending their interests independently. There is, however, much thinking to be done and policies to be made. The Gulf Arab countries have been blessed with immense wealth. These states should start focusing on improving their industrial base. The Gulf union is a nice and workable idea and work on this alliance should be expedited.
