This is with reference to the article “When reality beggars belief” (Feb. 10) by Linda S. Heard. The current situation in Yemen is indeed very confusing. We fear that Yemen might slip into a protracted civil war, which will ultimately affect the entire region. The international community appears to have taken little notice of the Yemeni situation. That is the problem with the global powers, instead of taking immediate actions they let the problem increase in magnitude.

The crisis in Yemen presents a dangerous scenario, as the entire region is already undergoing various issues. This situation will only boost terrorism in Yemen and the so-called Islamic State (IS) may try to take advantage of the situation.

I urge all the tribal elders in Yemen to forge unity among their ranks and instead of relying on Al-Qaeda elements, they should try to confront the Houthis politically. It is, however, difficult to convince the Houthi forces mainly due to the Iranian support they are reportedly receiving. In any case, Houthis are also Yemenis. Instead of relying on Iran, they should give priority to the interest of their country. Infighting will only render Yemen weak and unstable.
