This is with reference to the report “Divorce celebration ‘against Shariah’” (Nov. 8). Sending invitation cards to celebrate divorce is indeed unimaginable. What is more worrying is that such events are taking place in the Kingdom, which makes it all the more confusing.

The Muslim society is based on the teachings of Islam that does not approve of unnecessary and extravagant wedding celebrations. How come then one sends invitation cards to attend a party celebrating divorce?

The King Abdulaziz University professor, Hasan Safar, is right when he says organizing such parties does not belong to the good ethics of Islam and Muslims.

If divorce celebration is heresy in Islam, as the report suggests, then it surely contradicts the principles of Shariah. I am sure authorities here would take appropriate measures to contain such innovations lest they become a fashion among divorcees.

While divorce is permissible in Islam, it is at the same time said to have been disliked by Almighty Allah the most. And if Allah dislikes an act then how can we enjoy the same by organizing parties and wasting money on such silly things.

More than issuing edicts to forbid such unlawful functions, the need is to launch an awareness campaign to educate the masses about the evil effects of these practices.
