This is with reference to the article “Bangladesh on the brink” by M.G. Quibria (March 14). Dynastic rule has emerged as a major problem in the subcontinent. A few families, who treat their countries as personal properties, are ruling most of the countries in that part of the world.

In the case of Bangladesh, it is sad to see the country plunging into an abyss of unending turmoil. It is not just the problem with Bangladesh; politicians of the subcontinent are basically very egotistic. Most of the problems these countries face stem from the inflated egos of political leaders. The two ladies who are at odds with each other in Bangladesh actually rode the sympathy wave to gain power. People should realize that such petty sentiments don’t work in politics. The sole criterion of electing somebody to power is performance and a futuristic vision. Countries of the subcontinent have the potential to emerge as powerful economies but the politics of revenge don’t allow them to realize their true potential.

People of Bangladesh should give priority to their national interests. They should realize that lending blind support to any politician without considering the long-term consequences would only harm their country. Be it Sheikh Hasina or Khaleda Zia, none of them should be allowed to hold the country hostage to their whims and wishes. All politicians should be made to respect the law of the land.
