I read with interest the article “Don’t take terrorists’ bait” (Nov. 19) by Abdulateef Al-Mulhim. The writer’s analysis of the Paris attacks is spot on. I do agree with the writer that the United States fell prey to Al-Qaeda’s plan. Since the 9/11 attacks and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq that followed the tragedy, the United States and the entire world has been suffering badly.

In the wake of terrorist attacks, the governments usually curtail civilian liberties, a move that has very negative consequences. The US could serve as a good example. There is a huge difference between the pre- and post-9/11 America. A society, which was known for its openness and liberal values, has been plagued with xenophobia. The terrorists want the same thing to happen in the Europe. The Paris attacks provided the right-wing politicians in the West with the opportunity to promote their xenophobic policies and Islamophobia.

Daesh, in no way, represents Islam or Muslims. As a matter of fact, Muslims are the worst victims of terrorism. Daesh, Al-Qaeda and their likes don’t enjoy popular support in the Muslim world. In such a situation, it is unjust to blame the entire Muslim population for the actions of these deviant organizations. It is wrong to associate these attacks with Islam. These terrorists may be chanting Islamic slogans before carrying out attacks but that does not Islamize those actions.
