I read with interest the article “Lethal fear of science” by Abdul El-Sayed (Feb. 11). Although this article discusses the situation in the United States, the problem is prevalent in other parts of the world as well. In Pakistan, for instance, semi-literate religious elements have created a mess by issuing irresponsible edicts against polio vaccines. No scientific research supports their ideas but they have succeeded in creating fears among the rural population due to which polio has staged a comeback. However, it is not the only reason for the reemergence of this crippling virus but it has played a huge role.

Sometimes, I feel that the social media plays a very negative role in spreading such misinformation. There is a great need for creating awareness among masses regarding this issue. We need to take steps to protect our future generations.
