This is with reference to the report “KSA denounces carnage in Paris” (Nov. 15). Our hearts go out for those who lost their loved ones in the Paris carnage that took place on Friday night. We Muslims offer our heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Daesh has once again blatantly violated the injunctions of Islam by targeting innocent people. This terror outfit is far removed from Islam. The western world should understand that Daesh or its likes don’t represent Islam. These groups only represent or are supported by an insignificant minority in the Muslim world, which adheres to a wrong or skewed interpretation of Islam. Muslims in general don’t like to associate themselves with these elements due to their intolerant behavior and myopic worldview. Before blaming Islam and Muslims, western officials and analysts should realize that Muslims are also the victims of terrorism, perhaps the worst ones.

We are reading statements of various European and western leaders against the Syrian refugees. These hapless people are also the victims of the same group that claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks. They should not be seen as enemies. This attack should not hamper the efforts to rehabilitate the refugees in Europe. By doing so, we would be offering recruits to extremist organizations in a platter. The world leaders should tread this path carefully and should not let emotions overcome logic.

It is the responsibility of the western media not to allow Islamophobes spit their venom on air, as it will only add to the existing problems. The best way is to ramp up joint efforts to fight extremist elements and terrorism.
