Through the esteemed letters’ column of Arab News, I would like to draw attention of the readers toward the plight of our people in Sudan due to flash floods that are wreaking havoc on the lives and properties.

Thousands of houses made of mud bricks and wood have been reduced to rubble mainly in Salha in Khartoum. Ferocious wind together with heavy rains have made lives miserable which is a humanitarian challenge facing Sudan. According to a UN report, more than seven million people, about 20 percent of the Sudanese population, are in need of urgent aid.

What is of concern for us is that only last year in August a similar situation had seen Khartoum being inundated in which more than 180,000 people were affected.

This year the rainy season has just started and we are afraid the troubles like the last year may be just around the corner. River level is rising and the people are being warned along the Nile to take care. God save us!
