I read with interest the article by Talal Alharbi “Are we really ready for competition?” (Feb.1). The writer has raised important issues that need to be addressed on an urgent basis. I agree with the views expressed by the writer. I particularly liked his objective approach. It is very important for the relevant authorities to deal with the situation in a realistic manner. Unfortunately, articles like the ones in question are immediately branded as anti-Saudi or anti-Saudization write-ups. Those leveling such accusations should try to set aside petty emotions for the greater good of their country.

Saudi Arabia seeks to diversify its sources of income and is currently making efforts to move away from its dependency on oil. At such a critical juncture, the Kingdom needs workers-and investor-friendly policies to attract foreign talent and international investors. Diversification of economy needs an entirely different approach. It calls for the opening up of Saudi markets to the foreigners. The ongoing Saudization drive has the exact opposite impact on the local market. Many people cite the example of some neighboring GCC countries in this regard. Saudi Arabia is different from its GCC counterparts. It is not only different in size but it also has huge potential as compared with other GCC countries. The Kingdom has the ability to diversify its economy much faster and in a much better way than other GCC countries.

Creating job opportunities for the Saudi youth or the local population is indeed a desirable goal but it should not come at the expense of the national and economic interests of Saudi Arabia. Expansion of economic base automatically produces jobs for the local population but doling out jobs without taking into consideration merit and qualification may temporarily address the issue but it will create huge problems in future. Saudi Arabia needs a comprehensive strategy to deal with the situation and suggestions forwarded by writers like Talal Alharbi should be given due importance and taken seriously.
