Bihar has banned liquor from April 1 next year. It is indeed a welcome move by the government of a state struggling to fight poverty. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reportedly said the poorest of poor had been consuming liquor, badly hitting their families and children’s education. Increasing liquor consumption is also a major cause for domestic violence, whether it is Bihar or anywhere else. However, one will have to wait and watch how successfully the new government’s order is implemented. The government of that state is best advised to launch awareness campaigns against the ill-effects of liquor.
