This is with reference to the report “1,456 rain-created swamps in Jeddah ‘to dry under sun’” (Nov. 30). It is very surprising to note that the authorities are doing nothing about these water pools. They appear to be oblivious of the negative consequences of these pools, which if not taken care of may become breeding grounds for mosquitos and cause various other ailments.

The decision to leave these swamps for natural evaporation appears to have been taken to save money. In the wake of outbreak of an epidemic, the cost would be much higher than the money saved. Had it been a few pools of water, the decision would have been understandable but we are talking about 1,456 swamps and it is not a joke. As a matter of fact, clearing city areas of such swamps should be part of rain-related preparations.

At a time when various viruses or diseases like MERS and dengue, have already created fear among the masses, the municipal authorities should have avoided taking such a decision. The pictures used with the report shows the gravity of the situation. It appears more like a lake and such bodies of water are not left to dry under the sun.
