It is really annoying to see people throwing objects from moving cars. The other day, I saw somebody throwing an empty beverage can from a moving car that landed on the windshield of the car. It was a close shave, as the driver of the other car somehow controlled his vehicle preventing an accident in one of the busiest streets of Riyadh. This is a deplorable approach and put others’ lives at risk. I fail to understand as to why people do such things. They could keep such objects with them in the car and dispose them off in a proper way once they reach their destination.

Throwing empty water bottles, beverage tins and even tissue papers out of moving cars have become a common scene. Authorities are spending huge funds to ensure cleanliness on streets. We see hardworking road cleaners with a mobile bin and a broom trying their level best to keep the streets clean. I strongly urge the authorities to impose heavy fines on such people on the lines of Singapore to keep the city clean. Sometimes strict punishments are required instead of awareness campaigns to put an end to such practices.

Even the capital city of Sri Lanka, Colombo, experienced similar problem and the authorities had to impose fines to check the situation. Now the situation is well under control and Colombo looks clean and shiny.

A famous Bollywood star on his recent visit to Colombo commented, “There are a lot of trees on both sides of Colombo’s streets. I did not see dry leaves strewn on the roads or walkways.”

We should cooperate to keep our cities clean and tidy.
