I read with interest the report “Book fair opens with a call to curb terror through writings” (March 6). I commend the authorities for organizing this event. It is very true that reading broadens one’s horizons and makes people tolerant toward other people and cultures. Intolerance is a byproduct of ignorance. The fear of unknown breeds the feelings of hatred. Take the West, for instance, where Islamophobia is on the rise. Their opinion about Islam and Muslims is based on the wrongdoings of a few terrorist groups. Had they been more aware of Islam and Muslims, they would have refrained from making generalizations about our religion and its followers. The same goes for many in our part of the world. We know the West as we see in the news media and Hollywood flicks. As a matter of fact, we all share the same humanistic values and traditions.

Books help bridge gaps between people. If one reads Russian classics, it would dawn on him/her that human beings think alike. I urge the authorities to organize more book festivals and other literary events. International authors should also be invited to the Kingdom to share their views with the youths. People-to-people contact will also help fight extremism.
