This is with reference to the article “ Wake up Pakistan, wake up” (Dec. 17) by Syed Tausief Ausaf. Nobody in his right frame of mind could disagree with the views expressed by the writer. His analysis of the situation is spot on. It is true that it is due to the deep divisions within Pakistani society that the Taleban and their likes are thriving. Our policymakers appear to be trapped in a cat’s cradle of ethnic issues. They don’t appear to be thinking beyond the provincial levels. I am not at all blaming one politician or political party.

Despite the passage of over six decades, we are yet to become a nation. We are nothing but an unruly crowd with no sense of direction. Instead of thinking along provincial or ethnic lines, we should start thinking as Pakistanis. Without forging unity among our ranks, we cannot effectively fight these lunatics who are spreading terror in the name of religion. One hopes that the brazen attack on the school in Peshawar will silence Taleban sympathizers once and for all.

We all are to be blamed. It is mainly due to our internal divisions that things have come to such a pass. People, who used to criticize the armed operation against these brutes, will now realize that these elements don’t deserve sympathy. They only deserve bullets.
