This is with reference to the report “Hungary police force migrants from train tracks” (Sept. 4). Our hearts go out for these distressed people who have been forced to flee their countries and seek refuge in foreign lands.

The heart-wrenching pictures of these helpless people and the treatment meted out to them have put all humanity to shame. The picture of the innocent child, Aylan Kurdi, lying dead on the shore of the coastal Turkish town, Bordum, has emerged as a symbol of international apathy toward the refugees’ problem.

The picture showing the lifeless body of Aylan Kurdi must have brought tears to the eyes of everyone. He did nothing to deserve such a fate. That poor child drowned while refugees made a failed attempt to sail to the Greek island of Kos.

Aylan Kurdi and his family were among thousands of unfortunate people trying to flee war in their countries. Unfortunately, the so-called torchbearer of human values — the European Union — stands sharply divided on this issue. The differences among the EU member states have resulted in hundreds of death on the high seas.

The Mediterranean is turning into a huge grave for those in search of peace and shelter. We appreciate German Chancellor Angela Merkel for coming to the rescue of these boat people. She says, “Germany is a strong country and we will manage.” Merkel has firmly stood against all right-wing anti-immigrant groups in Germany. However, we believe the only way to stop this influx is to eradicate terrorism in the countries currently in turmoil, as David Cameron rightly said, “The best solution to the migration crisis is to bring peace and stability to the Middle East.”

Turkey’s active participation with the West in coordinated attacks on Daesh bases in Syria, Iraq and Libya is very important for any success. There is no time to waste.
