Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife’s gesture to donate 99 percent of their financial worth over their lifetimes — around $45 billion — for charitable purposes is commendable. The couple’s announcement was in celebration of the birth of their daughter. They have donated this wealth for the noble cause of solving various hardships mankind is facing like diseases and hunger, as well as for personalized learning, building welfare communities and a better tomorrow.

Zuckerberg’s gesture is in sync with the tradition of many American businessmen and industrialists whose philanthropic actions are exemplary among young Silicon Valley billionaires. Charitable works done by organizations and foundations set up by Rockefeller, Ford, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and many others have made a big difference in the world.

Even Saudi Prince Alwaleed, chairman of Kingdom Holding Company, has announced to donate his wealth for charitable causes.

India and Pakistan too have a large number of billionaires but they have hardly spent their fortunes on the wellbeing of their fellow citizens or social causes in the world.
