This is with reference to the article “Power of the ordinary” (Feb. 6) by Aijaz Zaka Syed. The writer has aptly described Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal.

Of course, Kejriwal represents the common man but one also hopes that having come so far he will not balk like he did the last time. Curiously, the Indian media has tacitly begun downplaying Modi’s appearances and speeches probably owing to the recent Obama debacle, which dangerously brought India close to becoming a laughing stock. Gone is the pride from the rags-to-riches story of the “chai wala” and gone is the glow from the prime minister’s cheeks, as he now tries to challenge the aam admi, the common man. Modi in his euphoria had to be reminded by a foreign dignitary the worth of a nation; the strength of humanity, the need for a secular culture and the respect for religions.

The media is a savvy player. They know very well which side their bread is buttered and now that there seems to be some hope in Kejriwal, they are making sure that he makes the headlines. What’s more, his ratings are also looking good for now. Let’s see what the future holds.
