This is with reference to the report “Bangladesh bans FB, chat apps for security reasons” (Nov. 25). Any administration that takes such measures basically exposes its own weakness and incapability in maintaining law and order. It is not just Bangladesh; many countries in the Third World find it very convenient to ban Internet or social media websites. Such steps should not be considered permanent solution to any problem. In Pakistan, people are made to suffer on various religious holidays. The authorities citing security reasons suspend cellphone and Internet services making it difficult for people to contact one another. It really gets horrible in case of an emergency.

Despite all these temporary measures, miscreants always find a way to create chaos whenever they want. We usually tend to treat the symptoms not the illness. It saddens me to go through reports coming out of Bangladesh. Just a few years ago, Bangladesh was moving fast on the road of economic prosperity but some wrong political moves have inhibited the growth. There was no need to resurrect ghosts of the past. Such politically motivated actions are usually taken to hide one’s weaknesses and follies to divert media and public attention at the expense of national interests. That is exactly what is happening in Bangladesh. I have nothing personal against the current leadership and I don’t consider myself an expert on Bangladesh politics but the result of the continuous tiff with the opposition is obvious.

Cases have been reopened against people for their alleged roles in the 1971 war at a time when they are already very old and should have been pardoned (if they are found guilty of committing any crime) on humanitarian basis due to their old age. The politics of revenge has rendered the subcontinent weak. Why don’t our leaders bury their differences for the welfare of their people?
