The report “Misyar now ‘a widespread reality’” (Oct. 12) has raised an important social issue. We should look into all the aspects of this issue with the utmost care. In my opinion, Misyar is not an appropriate way out. Due to unnecessary traditions, getting married has become an uphill task. This phenomenon is not unique to Saudi Arabia. The entire Muslim world is facing this issue. We are the followers of a religion, which stresses so much on simplicity in life.

It is sad that the Saudi youths have to look for temporary solutions to this important problem. The authorities should look into the matter and try to impose ban on extravagant wedding ceremonies. The tradition of dowry should also be banned so as to make it easier for people to get married. If the situation is not controlled, the trend of Misyar marriages will shred the social fabric.

I urge all religious scholars across the Muslim world to launch a war against all un-Islamic traditions and teach people to perform wedding ceremonies in a simple manner. — Arshad, Dammam
