This is with reference to the article “Pakistan needs electoral reforms” (Nov. 14) by Nadeem M. Qureshi. This is more or less what Imran Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf is demanding but in a different way. His ways of doing things may be questioned but his demands are logical. The problem in Pakistan is that the ruling class does not want to change the system. They want to maintain status quo for their selfish interests.

The ruling class is very well aware of the fact that electoral reforms will end their control over the country’s political system. Basically they are leeches and don’t want the country to progress.

In addition to electoral reforms, we should wage a campaign to put an end to dynasty politics. It seems as if the country belongs to two or three families who are playing a game of musical chairs. They are getting richer by the minute and people of the country are getting sucked into the vortex of poverty.

In our country, being a Sharif, Bhutto or Zardari has become the best qualification for joining politics and holding public offices. I blame the masses who don’t attach importance to agendas and past performance of a political party.

Most of the political parties have been given various chances to prove their acumen and sincerity and above all to perform. Unfortunately, infrastructure development impresses our people. It is our right. By improving civic infrastructure, they don’t do any favor to us. It is their duty. It is important for the people to realize their mistakes and mend their ways.
