This is with reference to the report “Ramadi liberated from Daesh” (Dec. 29). We should better not celebrate this achievement too much. We cannot rule out the possibility that it might be a tactical retreat. The coalition forces should strengthen the defenses of the city without fail and ensure that it does not fall back into the hands of these barbaric creatures who are using the name of our great religion for their own selfish interests.

The coalition forces should carefully assess the situation and try to find the reasons for this retreat. Once Daesh’s weaknesses are identified, the alliance should bank on those weaknesses that led to this defeat and exploit the situation to its advantage. The Iraqi government should also step up its efforts to reconcile with the Sunni population of the country. Without sectarian reconciliation, the fight against Daesh in Iraq will not come to an end.
